Gilbert was named for William Gilbert, who donated land to the Arizona Eastern Railway for the purpose of building a line connecting the Arizona cities of Phoenix and Florence. The town’s first grocery store opened in 1910; Gilbert was incorporated ten years later. During the early 20th century, Gilbert was known as the “Hay Capital of the World.”

Today, Gilbert has a population of 208,453 in an area of 76 square miles, making it the most populous incorporated town in the U.S. Although it grew from agricultural roots, modern-day Gilbert serves as a diverse suburban center located just southeast of Phoenix.
